Mountain biking in Tyrol
Overview
Tyrol for riders
If one region deserves to be called the heart of alpine mountain biking, it is Tyrol. Bike parks sit denser here than anywhere else in Austria, the lifts haul you above 2,000 metres, and the trails run from gentle flow to rock gardens that will shred your tube. Innsbruck is the unofficial capital: for years it hosted Crankworx, the world's biggest gravity event, and that legacy still lives in every root and rut.
The hub is Bikepark Innsbruck at the Muttereralm, home to the notorious Crankworx downhill "Rough One". The legendary Nordkette Singletrail – for years one of Europe's toughest descents – has been closed since the end of 2019 (lapsed nature-protection permit). Want something broader? Bike Republic Sölden serves a whole network of trails across high-alpine terrain.
But Tyrol is more than Innsbruck. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis runs one of the most family-friendly park families in the Alps, Mayrhofen delivers proper Zillertal steepness, and Nauders on the Reschen Pass scores with the cross-border Plamort trail. The scenery to match: limestone spires in the north, glaciated three-thousanders in the south, green alpine pastures and valley floors full of uphill flow in between. Who is it for? Anyone chasing altitude, variety and real rock – and not scared of a long day on the brakes.

Trip planning
Plan your trip
Getting there: Innsbruck is the best base – its own airport, direct trains from Munich, Zurich and Vienna, plus the A12/A13 as the backbone. From there most bike parks are 30 to 90 minutes away. Regional transport (VVT) carries you and your bike to many valley stations.
Best time: The lift season usually runs from early/mid June to early/mid October. High summer is the safest bet; in spring and late autumn the higher parks open later or close earlier. Check operating days on the official sites before you go.
Bed & shop: Innsbruck, Sölden, Mayrhofen and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis all have dense bike infrastructure – rental, workshop, guiding and bike-friendly lodging. For multi-day trips, pick one region as a base camp and run day trips into the neighbouring valleys.
