Overview

Innsbruck, Stubai & Ötztal for riders

If you want to know where alpine mountain biking actually lives, you come here. The valleys around Innsbruck pack almost everything worth riding into a small area – from your first flow trail to a no-compromise rock garden up the mountain. The city sits right in the middle, the lifts start more or less on your doorstep, and the backdrop is the reason you keep stopping to look.

Bikepark Innsbruck at Muttereralm is the friendly heart: ten lines from blue to black, plus "The Chainless One", a seven-kilometre cruise back to the valley. The legendary Nordkette Singletrail – 4.2 kilometres, over 1,000 vertical metres and for years one of Europe's steepest descents – has been closed since the end of 2019, however: its nature-protection permit lapsed and it is no longer rideable. Prefer flow? The Bichl Trails offer easy laps close to town.

Further west the Ötztal opens up: Bike Republic Sölden is the region's most ambitious project, with 17 shaped lines, 16 natural trails and three pump tracks – high, spread out and always growing. Add the Grubigstein above Lermoos to the west. The region carries the Crankworx legacy but wears it lightly: there's room here for families just as much as for enduro nerds and downhillers.

Getting there: Innsbruck is the hub – motorway (A12/A13), airport and train station all right in town. The Ötztal and Sölden are about an hour west, Lermoos sits on the Fernpass route towards the Zugspitze. You can do a lot by train and regional bus, but a car is handier for Sölden and Kühtai.

Best time: Roughly May to late October, depending on lift hours. Bikepark Innsbruck usually opens in May; high-altitude Sölden starts a little later but runs long. Midsummer is reliable, early autumn quieter with better colours. Note that the Nordkette Singletrail has been closed since the end of 2019; seasonal wildlife closures also apply on the Nordkette.

Bed & shop: Innsbruck as a base has the widest choice of accommodation, bike shops and workshops – radiate out into the valleys from there. Sölden, Kühtai and Lermoos have rental and service right at the lifts. Stock up on spare parts in the city.

FAQ

Where can beginners mountain bike around Innsbruck?

The friendliest options are Bikepark Innsbruck at Muttereralm with its blue lines and the Bichl Trails close to town for practice. Sölden has an easy entry with the blue Drimmle Line, Lermoos offers flat family trails. The notorious Nordkette Singletrail has been closed since the end of 2019 anyway.

Which is the best bike park in the Innsbruck–Ötztal area?

Depends what you're after. For the biggest network and lots of shaped lines, head to Bike Republic Sölden. For short trips from the city, Bikepark Innsbruck is hard to beat. For maximum vertical and an enduro classic, the Grubigstein above Lermoos delivers.

Can you still ride the Nordkette Singletrail?

No. The trail has been closed since the end of 2019: its nature-protection permit lapsed and was not renewed. It has been unmaintained since mid-2020, sections are overgrown or filled in, and there are barriers at the entrances; transporting downhill bikes on the cable car has at times been banned as well. Before that it was rated one of the steepest and most difficult descents in Europe, at roughly 4.2 kilometres and over 1,000 vertical metres. For something hard today, head to Bikepark Innsbruck.

Do you need a car or does public transport work?

Innsbruck itself is well served by public transport, and you can reach Muttereralm and the Bichl Trails without a car. For the Ötztal (Sölden), Kühtai and Lermoos a car is a lot more comfortable, though train and regional buses cover much of it. Innsbruck makes the best base to radiate out from.

When is the bike park season in the region?

Roughly May to late October, depending on the lift and altitude. Bikepark Innsbruck usually opens in May, high-altitude Sölden a little later but runs long. Always check exact dates and opening hours on the official sites first. The Nordkette Singletrail, meanwhile, has been closed since the end of 2019.
