Overview

Salzburg for riders

When it comes to gravity mountain biking in the Alps, the Salzburg region plays in the top league. No other Austrian state packs so much World Cup heritage into such a tight space: since 2010 the world's elite has descended on Leogang every year, in 2020 it hosted the World Championships, and the area around Saalbach-Hinterglemm proudly calls itself the "Home of Lässig". If you're after hard race tracks, endless flow kilometres and a dense lift network, you're in the right place.

The flagship is the Epic Bikepark Leogang with its notorious World Cup track "Speedster" – steep sections, root carpets and huge jumps where the pros hit over 60 km/h. Right next door the Bikecircus Saalbach Hinterglemm merges with Leogang and Fieberbrunn to form Austria's largest bike region with over 120 kilometres of lines. Prefer it mellower? Bikepark Wagrain serves flowing Snow Space trails for families and beginners.

But Salzburg is more than the big names. Around the Hochkönig, long and scenically stunning flow trails wind through meadows and forest, and in the city of Salzburg itself tours start on the Gaisberg. The range runs from child-friendly woom practice areas to brutal downhill race tracks. Who is it for? Everyone – from your first day in a bike park to chasing World Cup lines. You just need to bring one thing: an appetite for long days on the bike.

Trip planning

Plan your trip

Getting there: The city of Salzburg has its own airport and rail hub, reachable directly from Munich and Vienna. The A10 (Tauern) motorway is the backbone towards the Pongau – Wagrain and Hochkönig sit practically on the motorway. Leogang and Saalbach are around one to one and a half hours from the city via the A10/B311.

Best time: The lift season usually runs from mid/late May to early/mid October; high summer is the safest bet. Leogang's World Cup week normally falls in June – expect plenty going on around that date. Exact operating days vary year to year and are listed on the lift operators' official sites.

Bed & shop: Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Leogang, Wagrain and the Hochkönig all have dense bike infrastructure – rental, workshop, guiding and bike-friendly lodging. For a multi-day trip, pick one region as a base camp and run day trips into the neighbouring valleys; many resorts sell cross-region bike passes.

FAQ

Where can beginners mountain bike in the Salzburg region?

The most relaxed options for beginners are Wagrain with flowing Snow Space trails and a dedicated woom practice area. The Bikepark Hochkönig also starts very easy. As a beginner, steer well clear of Leogang's World Cup track.

What are the best bike parks in Salzburg?

At the top sit the Epic Bikepark Leogang (World Cup) and the Bikecircus Saalbach Hinterglemm, together over 120 km of trails. Then there are Wagrain and the Hochkönig. Which is best depends on your level.

Where does the mountain bike World Cup take place in Salzburg?

At the Epic Bikepark Leogang. It has hosted the annual UCI World Cup since 2010, and the World Championships in 2020. Outside race weeks you can ride the "Speedster" race track yourself (around 2.6 km, roughly 468 vertical metres) – but it's seriously demanding.

When is the bike park season open in Salzburg?

Most lifts run from mid/late May to early/mid October. Higher trails tend to open later and close earlier. Exact operating days vary year to year – check the lift operators' official sites before your trip.

Is a weekend enough to ride Saalbach and Leogang?

Barely. Saalbach Hinterglemm and Bikepark Leogang connect with Fieberbrunn in the same network, offering over 120 km of lines – easily several days' worth. For a weekend, base yourself in one park and add a day in the neighbouring resort.
