North Rhine-Westphalia for riders
North Rhine-Westphalia is not an alpine region – and it doesn't pretend to be. What makes Germany's most populous state strong is something else: access. From Cologne, the Ruhr area or Düsseldorf you're at a lift in one to two hours, and the gravity centre of this west is clearly the Sauerland. Low mountains instead of three-thousanders, but with a density of bike parks and trail centres that is hard to beat for after-work laps and weekend trips.
The flagship is Bikepark Winterberg – one of the biggest and oldest bike parks in Germany, often called the "mother of all German bike parks", with roughly a dozen lines from a beginner course to the iXS downhill. Just around the corner sits the young Bikepark Olsberg with flowlines and a kids' track, and in Brilon a flowy singletrail network favours riding fun over raw technicality.
Further west, in the Bergisches Land and the Eifel, things get quieter but not empty: the Trailpark :metabolon in Lindlar sits practically on Cologne's doorstep, and the DIMB Bikepark Rureifel near Hürtgenwald serves natural downhills in the Eifel. Honestly: if you're chasing alpine vertical and rock-garden epics, you go elsewhere. But if you come from the west, want to ride a lot and invest little in the drive, NRW offers a dense, year-round rideable playground – from green to properly rough.

Getting there: The Sauerland is the core area – well connected via the A44/A46 from the Ruhr region, Cologne and Kassel, with Winterberg and Olsberg under ninety minutes from the conurbation. The Trailpark :metabolon and the Bikepark Rureifel in the Bergisches Land and Eifel are reachable from Cologne in under an hour. Winterberg also has a rail connection.
Best time: As low mountains, NRW is rideable far longer than the Alps. Bikepark Winterberg usually opens in spring and runs into late autumn; free-to-use trail parks like Rureifel are typically open from around April to November. In high summer the forest ground dries well, while after rain the low mountains turn slippery fast. Check operating days in advance.
Bed & shop: Winterberg is the best base – rental, workshop, protection and bike-friendly lodging are dense there, with Willingen as a neighbour just across the state line. For the western spots, Cologne or the Bergisches Land make a good base; many parks are free and lift-less, so a day trip with your own uphill is enough.
