Mountain biking in Baden-Württemberg

After Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg is Germany's second-largest MTB state – and one of its most varied. You run into two completely different biking worlds here: the Black Forest with serious downhill mountains in the south and west, and the Swabian Alb with its limestone topography in the east. In between sits a dense web of club dirt parks, pump tracks and local flow trails that few other German states can match for coverage. From the flat Neckar lowlands to the High Black Forest above 1,000 metres, it is all here.

The flagship in the east is Bikepark Albstadt on the Swabian Alb: in the neighbouring "Bullentäle", the region regularly hosted the UCI XC World Cup until 2022 – cross-country at world level. In the south, Bikepark Todtnau at the Hasenhorn is one of Germany's oldest and steepest downhills, its race track dating back to 1996.

If you prefer things less brutal or are looking for the finest enduro flow, you will love the area around Freiburg: The legendary Freiburg trails (built and maintained by Mountainbike Freiburg e.V.) offer legal singletrails on the Rosskopf and Schauinsland – such as the famous "Borderline". On top of that, there are ideal starting points for natural trails in the Central Black Forest around Freudenstadt. The scenery ranges from gentle orchard meadows in the Neckar valley through dark fir forests to the open juniper heaths of the Alb. Who is it for?
