MTB Equipment for Beginners

Which bike, which helmet, which pads – what you really need and what can wait. The honest gear guide for MTB beginners without marketing fluff.

Updated: 9 June 2026

Getting into mountain biking doesn't have to be expensive – but there is kit where you shouldn't cut corners. Here is what really counts.

The bike: hardtail or full suspension?

For getting started, a good hardtail (front suspension fork, no rear suspension) is plenty. It is cheaper, lower maintenance and teaches you clean technique. Budget: from around €800–1200 new. Full suspension bikes start at around €2000+ – worthwhile once you know MTB is for you.

Helmet: the most important purchase

A good MTB helmet is essential. For trail riding: open-face helmet with good ventilation. For bike parks and jumps: full-face helmet. Budget: €60–150 for a solid helmet. Do not cut costs on the helmet.

Protective gear

Knee pads are recommended on red and black trails and in bike parks. Gloves protect in falls. A back protector is optional but sensible. Budget: €30–80 for good knee pads.

What else you need

MTB shoes (more important than people think – proper grip makes a big difference), a pack with a hydration bladder or water bottle, a multi-tool and puncture kit. The rest comes with time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a good beginner MTB cost?

A solid beginner hardtail costs around €800–1500 new. Second-hand you can often find a quality bike for €500–900. Avoid cheap bikes under €400 – they are heavy, poorly braked and frustrating to ride.

Do I need pads from the start?

A helmet always. Knee pads are recommended on blue/red trails and in bike parks. Gloves are cheap insurance. The rest you can add over time.
